Modules, Packaging & Form Factors
Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable Double Density — eight lanes in a body that still accepts legacy QSFP modules.
QSFP-DD takes the familiar QSFP body and adds a second row of electrical contacts, doubling the lane count from four to eight without changing the external dimensions. That is the entire design philosophy, and it produced the form factor's defining property: a QSFP+ or QSFP28 module inserts into a QSFP-DD cage and works.
For an operator with thousands of installed 40G and 100G optics, that is worth a great deal. A switch refresh does not have to be a transceiver refresh on the same day.
The additional contacts sit deeper in the cage. A four-lane legacy module simply does not reach them and engages only the first row, which is why it operates unchanged at its own speed. An eight-lane QSFP-DD module engages both.
There is no negotiation and no adapter involved — it is purely mechanical, which is why it is so reliable in practice. The switch reads the module's identity over CMIS and configures the port for whatever it found.
Keeping the QSFP outline means keeping QSFP's volume, and volume is what you spread heat through. At 400G that is comfortable. At 800G it is worked hard, and the cage heat sink and the airflow across the faceplate start to matter as much as the module itself.
This is a significant part of why AI fabrics — where every port runs hot and continuously — tend to specify OSFP instead, and why general-purpose data centres, where the installed QSFP28 base is large and the duty cycle lower, stay with QSFP-DD.
QSFP-DD is the mainstream data-centre choice for 400G, and QSFP-DD800 extends it to 800G. If your estate is full of QSFP28 and your upgrade is incremental, it is usually the right answer — see OSFP vs QSFP-DD for the full comparison.
